To contribute to reduced drowning-related deaths for children in Cambodia through increased risk mitigation and management in local communities and schools through reinforcing Water Safety and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills, teaching children how to Swim for Survival and increasing knowledge on drowning risk and prevention measures.
To contribute to national, regional and international dialogue and knowledge creation on drowning prevention in the context of building community resilience to the risk of drowning as a way to influence strategic support and sustainable change.
1. Children and youth in Sihanukville and Kampot provinces are trained in Water Safety and Survival Swimming.
2. Communities increase knowledge on how to prevent drowning risk and safety measures to be taken.
3. An awareness campaign targeting key actors in the context is conducted on the systematization and dissemination of best practices.
Cambodia is one of the countries most affected by drowning, with a mortality rate of 7.6 per 100,000 people, twice the regional average. The most vulnerable are children aged 4 to 14 (WHO, 2021).
Helpcode is on the frontlines to stop this crisis in Kampot, Kep, Phnom Penh, and Sihanoukville, equipping young people and communities with water safety skills, CPR, and survival swimming in collaboration with the Khmer Swimming Federation. We engage communities through local focal points, informative materials, and risk mapping.
Our online awareness campaign with Education Broadcasting Cambodia ensures free access to educational content. We also work at the institutional level to support Cambodia’s first national drowning prevention policy, so that every child can be safe.
