About the project

The civilian population is exhausted. More than 4 millions of people are flee from the regions where attacks are most frequent to relatively quieter regions, but even there they find food shortages, badly damaged infrastructure and an economy on its knees. Most of all, it is the children who have been deprived of their childhood and their future.

Intervention in Yemen is complicated also by the insecurity and the extreme difficulty of accessing the people in need. Present humanitarian activities are mostly focused on emergency and immediate aid to the Yemeni population. If, in areas of intense war activity, it is impossible to get out of the emergency situation until the conflict is over, in safer areas it is necessary to start working on the prospects for a way out of the emergency towards normalisation and recovery.

It is in this direction, and in one of Yemen’s relatively more stable regions, that Helpcode has decided to intervene to help improve the living conditions of the local population and lay the foundations for development. Through in-depth analysis carried out with the European Space Agency and the environmental information company Sistema, we identified the governorate of Al-Dhale’e in the south of the country: here there are more than fifty thousand internally displaced people living in extreme poverty.

Our first objective is to ensure that girls and boys can have more and better quality food, adequate to guarantee their full psychophysical development. In agreement with the UN Food Security Cluster, food baskets are prepared with products adapted to Yemeni needs and diet. The baskets is purchased by families thanks to payments for the renovation and refurbishment of public spaces in the Al-Dhale’e governorate.

The renovation of public infrastructure is the other main focus of our intervention. This work is entrusted to members of the most vulnerable families, nominated by the local communities themselves, who will receive a daily wage with which they can access essential goods and services, such as food baskets for children.

The buildings targeted been identified by the local communities, giving priority to those for educational and recreational use to help girls and boys return to school. The construction materials was purchased from local market and shops so with this contributed to the development of the local economy.
