About the project
The initiative takes place in the rural Magude, Moamba and Manhiça districts in Maputo Province, in a context that has been afflicted by multiple crises in recent years (climatic, economic, agricultural, medical), limiting potential for agricultural development and having a negative impact on the well-being and food security of the primarily farming households in the area, as well as the ability to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve its ability to adapt to climate change and, specifically, improve the ability of young men and women to find employment or set up a business that will generate income. The C2M project aims to help improve the quality of life of rural households, in terms of food security and socio-economic stability, with sustainable, resilient agriculture and opportunities to access the market for small producers who are members of farmers’ associations, with a special focus on young women and men, by increasing the productivity of farming, reducing production losses and improving technical capabilities.
To this end, the project employs a multidimensional integrated approach drawing on the consolidated experience of Helpcode and its partners: improving the productive capacity of 26 associations of small farmers with district-wide availability of infrastructure and services for agriculture, with a special focus on the promotion of irrigated agriculture; reducing losses in agricultural production by putting in place infrastructure and training in food preservation, processing and sale, and improving the ability of 90 young people to set up their own businesses through improvement of their technical skills in training courses and work experience programmes. Though this project, farmers and young men and women will become recognised players in the food and agriculture supply chains in the districts targeted and the province as a whole, consolidating their position in the system and perceiving an improvement in their households’ overall living conditions.
