General objective

Contributing to children’s food security in the context of climate crisis

Specific objective

Mitigating the effects of erosion of food security and nutrition caused by climate change among vulnerable households, reinforcing the food resilience of communities in the Moamba district through consolidation of school cafeterias and promotion of awareness of the effects and prevention of malnutrition.

Expected results

– Fulfilling the nutritional requirements of 2363 pupils in 8 schools through the school cafeteria service.
– Increasing awareness of the effects and prevention of malnutrition and adoption of good dietary practices by pupils’ households and teachers.

About the project

Mozambique is considered one of the African countries most vulnerable to climate change and its consequences. The population’s economic and social vulnerability and lack of dietary and nutritional security are exacerbated by the impact of these phenomena, which have created a widespread situation of dietary and nutritional insecurity in the country, and segments of the population, especially children, are at risk of acute malnutrition.

In this context, families tend to adopt strategies of adaptation to the crisis which include sale of productive assets and animals and removal of children from school so that they can help out at home, fetch water and work in the fields. Evidence collected during the climate crisis in the country in recent years reveals increased trafficking of minors, child labour and early forced marriages.

In this context, the project aims to reinforce dietary resilience among communities in the Moamba district through consolidation of school cafeterias in 8 primary schools, promotion of awareness of the effects of malnutrition on children and how to prevent them, with a special focus on the link between adaptation to climate change and dietary security.
